Hello there! This quarter has gone very fast and I am a bit surprised that we do not have many weeks left until fall break. The weather is still very warm and the students do get thirsty. Please make sure that your child comes to school with a water bottle everyday.
MATH: Today we started our next math unit - subtraction within 10. A "friendly notes" information sheet is being sent home this week. This can be kept at home to reference when doing homework with your child. SCIENCE: Atoms and matter GRAMMAR: Nouns (proper nouns and common nouns) Names are proper nouns LITERATURE: Owl at Home UPCOMING EVENTS: Thursday, September 21st - Spalding Night for Parents 6 - 7pm (This is a parents only event.) Friday, September 22nd - Spirit Day Friday, September 29th - Half Day Dismissal (12pm) Friday, October 6th - No school October 9 - 13th - Fall break Have a fabulous week Hello to a new week. Picture day was quite an adventure. Many of our scholars were quite excited to have their photos taken.
GRADED WORK: Remember that graded work is being sent home in the Friday blue folders. This work is to stay at home. This gives you an opportunity to check on how your scholar is doing, and go over any wrong answers with them to help further their understanding of the material. MATH: This week we will continue working on addition within 10. We will spend the math block reviewing the concepts in Chapter 3 on Thursday and the math test will be on Friday. HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH MATH: There are three things that will help your child with many of the first grade math concepts. 1. Number bonds Number bonds are set up as the whole and two parts. Knowing the number bonds will help your child with addition and subtraction problems as well as problems with missing addends. Below is a link for number bonds if you are interested: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1936266474/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2P5I4NW0QQAX1 2. MAKING TEN One of the skills we have been working on everyday is "making ten." Example: 1 and 9 make ten 2 and 8 make ten, etc. Being able to identify two numbers that make ten will help when learning addition and subtraction through 20, addition and subtraction through 40, and addition and subtraction through 100. 3. MEMORIZING BASIC MATH FACTS THROUGH 10 The Dollar Tree and several stores have flash cards. You can also use white note cards to make your own. STUDY GUIDES FOR OTHER SUBJECTS: This week we will begin sending home guides for other subjects such as literature, science, and history. These guides contain information about what we discuss in class and can be kept at home. GRAMMAR: Identifying nouns as a person, place, thing, or idea Identifying common nouns vs. proper nouns HANDWRITING: Correct letter formation Starting at the top and pulling down. Short letters do not go above the mid-point All letters touch the base line LITERATURE: "Different Lands, Different Stories" - Variations of "Little Red Riding Hood" SCIENCE: What is science? What is a scientist? Exploring the scientific method POETRY: "Work" by M.A. Stodart Please make sure your child is memorizing and practicing the poem. THE EXCITEMENT OF THE HEALTHY SNACK: One of the scholar's favorite time of day is snack recess. Part of their excitement comes from getting to eat a snack. Part of their excitement comes from holding up their bags and containers in front my face and proudly announcing what their healthy snack is for the day. UPCOMING EVENTS: Friday the 15th - Flagpole Dedication 6:00 pm Thursday the 21st - Spalding Night for Parents 6:00 pm (This event is for parents only.) Friday the 22nd - "Spirit Day" Saturday the 23rd - Great Hearts Gala Friday the 29th - Half Day Dismissal 12:00 pm (No lunch will be served on this day. Please send a healthy snack for your child to eat at recess) Please refer to the Athenian Echo for details about the coming events. Enjoy your week! Hello. I hope you were able to enjoy a nice long weekend. The scholars seemed well rested and ready to learn.

(plus sign is addition, the equal sign means "the same as.") I am sending home the Unit 3 "Friendly Notes" information sheet in the homework folders today. It is on the "Keep at Home" side of the folder. Please keep it at home and use as a reference when helping your child. POETRY: "Work" by M.A. Stodart There is a copy of the poem in the homework folder. Please have your child practice the poem on a daily basis. LITERATURE: Different Stories, Different Lands HISTORY: Ancient Mesopotamia CLASSROOM COORDINATOR: Mrs. Hierro has volunteered to be our classroom coordinator for this year. Be on the look out for e-mails from her has the year progresses. PICTURE DAY - Friday September 8th School picture day is this coming Friday. Picture packets / ordering forms are being sent home in the red folders today. You can order pictures online or by sending a check in the ordering envelope.
