Hello there! It is only Monday and already it is a full week!
FIELD TRIP: We are currently studying habitats in science. As a wrap-up to our habitat unit, the first grade will be visiting the Wildlife World Zoo on Thursday, March 29th. The permission form and information letter regarding chaperones will be placed in your child's red homework folder on Tuesday. MATH: We are finishing up our brief unit on multiplication this week with a review tomorrow and a chapter test on Wednesday. Our division unit will begin on Thursday. The "friendly notes" page for division will be placed in your child's red homework folder Thursday. POETRY: We continue to study "Bird Talk" by Aileen Fisher. We have found the rhyming pattern and put the poem to a song. Poetry recitations will be next week. MATH:
This week we are starting our multiplication unit. A "Friendly Notes" information page will be sent home in your child's red homework folder on Wednesday. Please keep it for your records and use it as a resource when helping your child with homework. POETRY: The new poem we are studying is "Bird Talk" by Aileen Fisher. Each student has their Harp and Laurel Wreath poetry book in their desk. The students enjoy finding and reading poems they have already recited, practicing the current poem, and looking at poems them may be reading in the future. SCIENCE: Habitats - We have studied the Arctic and the Sonoran Desert so far. This week we are focusing on the Grasslands. We are also studying the food chain and the difference between carnivore, herbivore, and omnivore. MATH: This week we are finishing up our unit of "Numbers through 40." Due to the amount of information that was in this unit, we are going to spend two math blocks reviewing the concepts taught in this chapter. The chapter 11 test will be this Thursday. I will be sending home the review work that we do in class on Tuesday and Wednesday. Feel free to use it as a tool when working with your child. Please note - Any review work that is sent home is not checked or graded for accuracy. If you see errors you are welcome to have your child fix the mistakes, but you do not need to send it back to school. SCIENCE: This week we are starting our unit on Habitats. POETRY: Poetry recitations for "My Shadow" began today. Please have your child continue to practice the poem. GRAMMAR / LITERATURE: The grammar focus continues to be identifying and speaking complete sentences as well as identifying the noun, pronoun, and verb in a sentence. We will also start reading Bargain for Frances this week. MATH: Our "Numbers to 40" unit continues. Last week most of the focus was on addition methods. On Friday we took a mid-chapter quiz. The quiz is in your child's red folder. This week we or working on subtraction methods, word problems, and adding three numbers. The third and final "Friendly Notes" information page will be sent home in your child's red homework folder on Tuesday. Please keep these information pages to use as a reference when helping your child with homework. These pages will also come in handy when we study the "Numbers through 120" unit during the 4th quarter. POETRY: By now your child should have the 3rd stanza of "My Shadow" memorized and be working on the 4th stanza. Poetry recitations begin the week of February 12th. HISTORY: We are finishing up the history unit on early explorers and settlers and are spending this week reviewing everything we have discussed. An information sheet / study guide has been sent home today in your child's red homework folder. You do not need to send that back to school. The history test is on Thursday.
