BLUE FOLDERS:
Just a reminder that blue folders are sent home every Friday. This folder contains graded papers for you to look over and keep. Blue folders should be returned with just the paper for parent initials every Monday. MATH: We will continue to focus on number bonds for most of the week. The unit 2 test on number bonds is this Thursday. We will be spending our entire math block on Wednesday reviewing. MATH WORKBOOKS: The majority of math homework assigned is in the math workbooks. We also use the math workbooks in class almost every single day. Please make sure the workbooks are sent back to school each day. Occasionally students have a chance to work on their math homework in the classroom. Even if students have a chance to finish the homework, the workbooks are still sent home. Please check over the homework even if you child has told you that it is finished. OTHER ACADEMIC AREAS: Literature: - Different Lands, Similar Stories Writing/Grammar: nouns, proper nouns, capital letters at the beginning of sentences, end marks at the end of sentences Handwriting: letter formation, letters touching the baseline (bottom line) UNIFORM DRESS CODE: The uniform dress code is in the family handbook as well as the front pages of the student agenda. Please make sure to look over it carefully. The two most common dress code violations seen in first grade is not wearing a belt and the color of the socks. "Socks for K-5 girls: Color: Solid White or Navy Length: Knee-high, ankle (must cover ankle bone) socks and/or nylon tights Girls may also wear white or navy tights" "Socks for K-5 boys Color: Solid White or Navy Length: Sport sock, crew or ankle (must cover the ankle bone)" Belts: "The slacks/shorts should have belt loops and a solid, black belt should be worn." In the past I have had parents ask if I knew of belts there were easy to buckle. Velcro belts are available at the uniform stores as well as on Amazon. Feel free to e-mail if you have questions about the uniform dress code. Hello to all. We have a busy week ahead of us and I have a lot of information to relay to you. Last week we began reading and discussing some of Aesop's fables. Instead of telling the students what the moral is, we have a Socratic discussion as to what the students think the moral is. Often times they come up with the meaning on their own, using words they relate to the best. During these discussions, as well as when every a student is speaking, we work on the the skill of "tracking the speaker." All hands go down and we turn toward the speaker to listen to what he/she has to say.
CURRICULUM NIGHT: K-2 Curriculum night is this Tuesday, August 22nd from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. This is a parents only event. Curriculum night is not an open house. Headmaster Washburn will be presenting information at 6:00. After her presentation, parents will be able to go to their child's classroom where the teachers have planned interactive mini lessons. We will present the lesson in a similar manner as we would during the school day. After the mini lesson night, we will present some general information about the first grade curriculum and we, hopefully, we will have time to answer some general questions. If you have specific questions, particularly ones about how your child is doing, please e-mail me and we can schedule a separate time to address them. Since curriculum night is not set up as an open house you may find it difficult to pop in and out of different classrooms if you have more than one child at the school. A couple of suggestions based on what parents have done in the past is: 1. Choose the classroom / grade level that you feel would be most beneficial for you to visit. 2. A spouse or other family member can visit one classroom while you visit another. GROWING IN INTEGRITY WHILE TAKING TESTS AND WORKING INDEPENDENTLY: Conversations about the virtues and well as integrating and identifying virtuous behavior in ourselves and others occurs continually. Through discussion, our class has identified integrity as "doing the right thing even though no one else is looking." It continues to amaze me how students, at such a young age, are able to not only understand the virtue, but identify the virtue when they or their classmates behave with integrity. Last week we discussed that one of the ways students can show integrity is by looking at their own paper or tests and not copying classmates' work. This can sometimes be challenging as they are developing belief in themselves. In the 1st and 2nd grade classrooms, integrity during tests and independent work is very important. There are consequences for looking at another student's paper and copying someone else's work. Before each test, quiz, and independent assignment, students are reminded to keep their eyes on their own papers and not look at anyone else's work. Any student who does look at someone else's paper and copies answers, etc. will complete the assignment but will receive a zero for a grade. We will also contact parents to let them know what happened so we can work as a team to keep it from happening again. READING BLOCK (DAILY 3) During our reading block we have been working hard learning foundations lessons to become an independent reader. One of those lessons include: "Three Ways to Read a Book." Those 3 ways are: 1. Read the pictures. (Go through the book and tell the story based on what pictures you see.) 2. Read the words. 3. Retell the story (Going back and retelling the story using both the words and the pictures as a guide.) These three different ways allow struggling readers to feel successful and allows all readers to explore a book with more depth. MATH: This week we will begin Unit 2 - Number bonds. An "Friendly Notes" information sheet will be sent home in your child's homework folder on Tuesday. Please keep this information sheet at home to use as a reference. UPCOMING EVENTS: Tuesday Aug. 22 - K-2 Curriculum night from 6 - 7. (This is for parents only.) Tuesday Aug. 29th - Family night at Peter Pipe Pizza 4:30 - 7:30 Friday Sept. 8th - School Picture Day Please read The Athenian Echo for more details about the events. I look forward to seeing you at curriculum night! Wow! We had a very busy week last week as we introduced, learned and practiced many classroom procedures. Classroom procedures allow for the classroom to run smoothly to create a safe environment for students to learn.
LUNCH REMINDERS: The students have lunch every day including the early release Wednesdays. The only times when students do not have lunch is when there is a half-day (12:00) dismissal. With the exception of the half-day dismissal, lunch begins at approximately 11:20. If you notice your child has forgotten his/her lunch and you need to bring it to school, please make sure it arrives no later than 11:00. BLUE FRIDAY FOLDERS: First grade does not have weekend homework so red folders will not go home on Fridays. Starting this Friday the blue "Friday Folders" will be sent home. The blue folders will include graded work as well as participation classwork. Inside each blue folder is a check off sheet. Please initial next to the date to show that you received the classwork. (There will not be a lot of work in the blue folders during the first 1 - 3 weeks.) Please return the Friday folders to school each Monday. MATH: While we will continue to practice procedures and learn new procedures this week, we will also be getting more into the content. Unit 1 is a short review unit of numbers 1 -10. This unit is a review of concepts taught the previous year and the unit assessment is scheduled for Friday. There are three regular things that happen with each math unit. 1. A "Friendly Notes" information sheet will be sent home in the homework folders for each unit. The information sheet contains vocabulary and the main examples of what is covered in class. This information sheet is not homework and is for the parents to keep as a reference. Since each unit builds on the previous units, I suggest keeping the information sheets in a binder or folder to use a reference throughout the year. 2. We always spend the entire math block reviewing concepts taught the day before a unit test. 3. Unless stated in the homework log, most math homework is in the math workbooks. Please make sure the workbooks are returned to school every day because we use them in class everyday as well. UNIFORM/DRESS CODE: Last week we spoke often about the dress code. If you have any questions about the dress code you may refer to the family handbook. The dress code is also in the front of the student agendas. Please look over the dress code carefully and contact the school is you have any questions. LOST CARDIGANS AND FLEECE JACKETS Please make sure that all ATE cardigans and fleece jackets are clearly labeled with your child's name. Since they all look the same, it is easy to get the different items mixed up. Please check your children's items regularly to make sure they have their cardigans and jackets. If there is ever a mix-up please return it to school and we will be sure to get the item to the correct child. A lost and found is also located at the front office. THE ATHENIAN ECHO: I have had several parents e-mail with questions about fingerprinting, PSO opportunities, and hot lunch options. Each week "The Athenian Echo" is e-mailed out to all Trivium East families. The Echo includes upcoming events and if you continue to scroll down you will find information, links, and contact information for all of the different organizations and events. UPCOMING DATES: Friday Aug. 18th - Half day - 12:00 dimissal (There will be no lunch on this day. Please make sure your child has a healthy snack to eat during recess.) Monday Aug. 21st - Fingerprint event for those wishing to volunteer (this event will be help at Trivium Prep) Tuesday Aug. 22 - K-2 Curriculum night from 6 - 7. (This is for parents only.) Tuesday Aug. 29th - Family night at Peter Pipe Pizza 4:30 - 7:30 Friday Sept. 8th - School Picture Day Have a fabulous week! Hello and here we are starting our first week of school for the 2017 - 2018 school year. My blog will be updated on a weekly basis - usually no later than Monday evening. Most blog posts will be fairly brief. The posts will be longer during the first week or two due to the large volume of information. The blog page as well as The Athenian Echo are excellent pages to read about general information for class and school.
Meet the teacher night was so fun! I enjoyed meeting so many of the students and parents who will be a part of our class. SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND CONSUMABLE BOOKS In the last couple of days I have spent several hours going through and checking off school supplies. If anything is missing a note will be sent home with the items that your child needs highlighted. Those parents who let me know that they were waiting for supplies to come in will also receive those notes as it is one of the ways I keep track of who I have contacted. THE HARP AND LAUREL WREATH and AESOP'S FABLES The lower grades do require all of the consumable books to be brought in at the beginning of the year. We will be using Aesop's Fables this week. We do use TheHarp and Laurel Wreath in the classroom at different times throughout the year. Below is a link that you can cut and paste into the browser bar to for The Harp and Laurel Wreath. It is also available at the Barnes and Noble near the school. https://www.amazon.com/Harp-Laurel-Wreath-Dictation-Curriculum/dp/0898707161/ref=pd_cp_14_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=FAPKRS2W0NJCQHBG6QHP The pink Spalding notebook and Singapore math workbooks must be ordered from the company websites. http://archwaytriviumeast.greatheartsacademies.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2017/05/ATE-Consumable-Book-List-17-18.pdf THIS WEEK It will be completely normal for your child to feel a mixture of nervousness and excitement throughout the week. Going from kindergarten to first grade is a huge step. This week our main focus will be learning and practicing grade level and classroom procedures and expectations. One of the school expectations that we will be going over will be the school dress code. While it is easy for the older scholars to relay information about dress code, the younger scholars have a harder time remembering so dress code notes will be sent home in your child's red homework folder. AFTER SCHOOL PICK UP PROCEDURE Below is a link to the pick-up and drop-off procedures. (As with all of the links on this page, you will probably have to cut and paste it into the browser bar.) Please direct any questions about the procedures to the front office. The pick-up procedure will take longer during the first weeks of school so your patience is appreciated. http://archwaytriviumeast.greatheartsacademies.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2017/07/ATE-Parent-pickup-dropoff-with-traffic-maps.pdf UPCOMING DATES: Every Wednesday is a 1:15 early release. Friday Aug. 18th - 1/2 day (12:00) dismissal Monday Aug. 21st - Fingerprint event at Trivium Prep (10am - 12pm) Tuesday Aug. 22 - K-2 Curriculum night (6 - 7pm) Tuesday Aug 29th - Peter Piper Pizza night (4:30 - 7:30 pm) I hope I was able to address most of the most common questions that arise during the first few days of a new school year. Have a wonderful week! -Mrs. Conklin |
