Hi there! December is such a fun month because there is so much going on. Tonight's concert will, I am sure, be very enjoyable!
CONCERT INFORMATION: You will have already received most of your concert information from the music teacher and the Athenian Echo. I am just going to include a couple of things while I am thinking about it. - The first grade concert is from approximately 6 - 6:30. Students need to arrive by 5:30 because rehearsals begin at 5:35. The kindergarten concert is before our concert and, while many of the kindergarten students will be leaving, please account for traffic and finding a parking space. - PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD HAS GONE TO THE BATHROOM BEFORE ARRIVIVNG! :-) - After the concert, we will be bringing our classes out to an assigned cone in the courtyard. It is dark by that time and I am very protective of the my students. I do not allow my students to just run to their parents. Please make sure you have made specific verbal and/or eye contact with either me or Mrs. Richards so we can actually see your child leaving with you. MATH: Because of tonight's concert, no homework has been assigned. Today we spent more than an hour and half meticulously going over the math concepts taught in chapter 8. As with every chapter, the reviews are in the red homework folders. They have not been graded or checked for accuracy and they do not need to be returned to school. Our next math unit is a focus on comparing numbers. The "Friendly Notes" information sheet will be going home on Thursday of this week. Please keep it and use as a reference when helping your child with homework. SPALDING: There is no Spalding homework tonight. Students will have lists for Tuesday and Wednesday nights, a review on Thursday, and a test over 20 words on Friday. SCIENCE: We are starting a basic introduction to the systems of the human body. *Please note - January's project week and project night will focus on the human body. Please watch for project week information in the next few weeks. GRAMMAR: Pronouns - words used in place of a noun LITERATURE: Frog and Toad All Year Have a fun week! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break!

Have a fabulous week! Historical and literary figure day was so fun! I loved seeing all the creative costumes!
MATH: We are studying Geometry! It is one of my favorite units to teach. Afterall, who could not love geometry? Especially at the first grade level when there is so much exploring involved. I have sent home a "Friendly Notes" packet that covers everything we are learning. It is in the red homework folders. Please keep it at home with the other notes to use when helping your child with homework. Do not send it back to school. *Note: I highly encourage your scholars to continue practicing addition and subtraction within 0-20 during this unit, as it will greatly help when we move on to larger numbers. Students should focus on breaking apart the 10's and 1's (ex. 16-4, becomes 10 and 6, take away 4.) SPALDING: This week we will only be learning 10 words. The review will be on Tuesday and the spelling test will be on Friday. HISTORY: While studying the Maya and Aztec civilizations last week, the students found it very interesting at how similiar they were to the Ancient Egyptians. They also enjoyed solving math problems using the Maya number system. This week the focus will be on the ancient Aztec and Inca civilizations. MATH: There is a lot of information for math this week. 1. The Chapter 6 - Addition and Subtraction within 20 chapter test is this Thursday. As with every math unit we will spend the Wednesday math block reviewing. These reviews always include test taking skills such as looking at the problem, decided what needs to be done to solve it, then solving the problem. The review will be sent home on Wednesday. It will not be graded or checked for accuracy. Feel free to go over it with your child if you choose. 2. Archway Trivium East was one of the youngest groups that were there. Our class behaved extremely well. The dancing was beautiful. I know that scholars enjoyed it. Whenever I glanced at any one of them their eyes were glued to the stage, taking in everything. As we left I saw several boys and girls attempt to copy the leaps and spins that they had seen on stage.
MATH FLASHCARDS: I had several parents ask where they could get math flash cards. You can find them at Dollar Tree, Target, and any other store that has a education section. You can also make you own using index cards. Last year I had found a website where you could make specific flashcards and then print them. I have since discovered that I can no longer do so on that website. If anyone happens to find a website where you can create and print your own flashcards please let me know. This week we are focusing on adding numbers through 20. Another information sheet was sent home in your child's red folder today.
